Contains professional correspondence of E.O.C. Ord with other U.S. military and government officials including U.S. Secretary
of War Jefferson Davis, General Horace Porter, and General U.S. Grant. Correspondence covers the gold rush and frontier years,
the American Civil War, Reconstruction, Indian Wars, "Negro's" in the military, the Nebraska Grasshopper disaster of the 1870s
and the Mexican Railroad construction. Also contains accounts from different assignments including the U.S. Coast Survey in
the 1850s. Also contains diagrams and letters pertaining to inventions of E.O.C. Ord, including a "flying machine", and a
U.S. Patent award (No. 27,147) for an artillery improvement. Also includes a biographical sketch Ord's life and career, his
passport to Mexico, and some personal correspondence with family members including father James Ord, brothers Dr. James L.
Ord, Robert "Bob" Ord, and wife Mary "Molly" Ord.
U.S. Patent award, No. 27,147. Washington, D.C., Feb. 4, 1860. Ribbon-bound legal documents volume (6 pages, 52 x 38 cm) consisting
of an official printed United States Patent Office award form filled in with manuscript descriptions of the patent and applicant
information, two drawings on linen tracing paper, and a manuscript description of the patent written and signed by Ord when
he was a captain in the U.S. Artillery. The patent office form is signed by the Secretary of the Interior, Jacob Thompson,
and the Acting Commissioner of Patents, S.T. Shugert, and has a green paper embossed seal of the Patent Office affixed. The
manuscript text signed by Ord is further signed by two witnesses from the 3rd Artillery, Lieutenant J.W. Patton and Second
Lieutenant Alex Piper. The patent is for " ... a new and useful [Application of gunpowder to flat projectiles, giving them
rotation] ..."
1847-1858. Handwritten correspondence, reports, notes, and a contract, in Spanish, between Ord and the city of Los Angeles,
to survey and create a map of the city of Los Angeles. Accompanying materials include typescript transcriptions of the letters,
a typescript English translation of the surveying contract itself, and a reprint of an article from the Southern California
Historical Society titled, "Story of Ord's Survey."

Edward Otho Cresap Ord (October 18, 1818-July 22, 1883) was the designer of Fort Sam Houston, and a United States Army officer
who saw action in the Seminole War, the Indian Wars, and the American Civil War. He commanded an army during the final days
of the Civil War, and was instrumental in forcing the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. He retired In 1880 and
accepted the position of engineer in the construction of the Mexican Railway. En route from Vera Cruz, Mexico to New York,
General Ord contracted yellow fever aboard ship. He was taken ashore in Havana, Cuba, where he died on July 22, 1883. He is
buried in Arlington Cemetery.
